Located in South Texas, San Antonio is the second largest city in Texas and the seventh largest city in the country. American Indians lived near the San Antonio River, calling the area "Yanaguana," meaning "refreshing waters."
In 1536, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca captured by American Indians after a shipwreck visited what would later be called Texas. The river his described would later be named The San Antonio River.
In 1836, the Battle of the Alamo took place, and the town would eventually encompass an area a mile to east of where the battle took place.
San Antonio has experienced population grown like many other of municipalities in the Southwest. San Antonio's population has nearly doubled in the last 35 years and has doubled from the 650,000 in 1970 to over 1 million is 2005.
